Woriking with Styrene
2007年08月15日 18:51:24 Toshi
I have got some questions from my friend and think my answers may be useful for other readers. So I post the answers here.

Q: The procedure for bonding two bits of styrene is, position, brush thinner over the two parts, allow to set. Does the thinner damage the areas you brush on to?

A: Yes, the thinner dissolves the styrene. So if you use too much, any applied parts are dissolved. But do not worry too much. As far as you do not touch the area applied and leave it until the thinner dries up, usually only you get shiny surfaces.

Q: Also the score and snap method of cutting styrene, for thicker pieces, do you just score more times?

A: Yes, simply make many cuts. I only work with 1mm and 1.5mm thickness and have no idea on thicker ones.

Q: Do you buy your styrene sheet in bulk, or just use the Evergreen stuff?

A: I buy styrene sheets from

http://www.mulford.com.au/main-frame.htm

quite cheep in bulk comparing to Evergreen ones.

Hi Toshi,

I live in England and came across your site as a link from a Yahoo forum I belong to. I have taken up 16mm narrow gauge railway modelling (16mm=1 foot approx 1/19 scale) which tends to use 32mm or 45mm "G" gauge track. I am building some steam engines and rolling stock amd will build my garden railway, probably next year. There are a lot of members on my forums from Australia and one of them posted a link to your site for the rail bending machine.

I liked your site a lot and have found some interesting things on it that I will use later and will bookmark it so I can revisit in future.

best regards

for your visiting of my site, Gerry.

I am not familiar with 16mm scale. Is it popular in UK?
Could you let me know the URL of the forum?
I want to have a look.

Toshi

Hajimemashite, o genki desu ka. Hi Toshi I have got to say what a great web page. I have been looking at the various sites to build a friend of mine, a garden railway, but after seeing Greg's layout from Loftus and your great web page, I might have to build one for myself. Its great to see people wanting to share their trials and errors that will ultimately save us all time and money. I think I might join your club and come along to see the other great railways.
Regards Rob

Welcom to great hobby

Have you learnt Japanese, Bob?
Welcome to the great hobby. I think garden railway is very nice hobby including quite wide range of aspect.
My puppy destroyed some parts of my railway. So I will concentrate in making rolling stocks for a while until she grows up.

Toshi,

You have a wonderful website and I've learned quite a lot while wondering through. Thanks very much for sharing with us. I will be coming back frequently because I saw much of use to me.

I visited Australia in 1982 and would like to come back again and bring my wife with me. I was in the Marine Corps when I visited Freemantle and Perth in Western Australia and didn't have as much time as I would have liked. Also, I would like to visit the east coast since I've never been there.

I don't have a website of my own yet, however when I do put one up, I will link to yours for sure.

Thanks again,
Bill

Sulky KK-2000
2006年01月07日 20:32:34 Toshi
Scratch building decals is always a headache of modellers. I found a good material in an USA site:

http://www.pulsar.gs/DECALS/index.html

However it needs a special spray adhesive Sulky KK-2000. I could not find it in Australia. I emailed them if they can ship it to Australia. The answer is NO. It is flammable and cannot be shipped to overseas. They say it is used to temporary fix cloths when sewing them, so it may be found in sawing shop, etc.
If anybody found this product in Australia, please let me know.
